June 12, 2008 at 2:05 PMI'm curious about how Jenny pronounces 肯定赚钱 (kĕndìng zhuànqián) at the end of the dialogue. It seems like it might be a device to clarify the pronunciation or flow of the words?

June 9, 2008 at 4:18 AMKen and Jenny mentioned that Shanghai was flat... a friend told me that you can also say 走路 (zǒu lù) instead of 爬山 (pá shān) for hiking - perhaps he meant hiking on a level trail, one that's not too steep?

June 5, 2008 at 7:09 PMwjefferys, thanks, that was a typo on both ting2 and dong3, hope I didn't confuse anyone. I'm having trouble with the Mac-pinyin interface, plus I just dropped the ball on correcting that.
Also, I was wondering when I wrote it, should a person write pinyin using the tone sandhi, or should it be written using the standard form? I know about the tone change, when speaking, but does a person write pinyin with the tone change? I assumed that you don't, but it often confuses me when I read a sentence written in pinyin without the tone change. Thank you for bringing this up.
Also, can you tell me if "bu" spoken with a 4th tone or a 2nd tone prior to the 3rd tone dong3?

June 3, 2008 at 6:25 PMOh, now I realize why people have given me funny looks when I say “听不懂”(tíng bù dǒng)... I must be getting the tone wrong and I'm saying "I don't have the energy to listen (to you)" (听不动 （tíng bù dòng))

May 27, 2008 at 12:10 PMrafael222/light487/Amber, I (obvious Westerner) was at a small store in Sichuan awhile back and wanted to find a map, so I asked the clerk "你们有地图吗？""ni3 men you3 di4tu2 ma?" and she: panicked, screamed (not too penetratingly), ran away and shouted to someone that she couldn't speak English. I was kind of disappointed in my Chinese ability at that point... now I feel better about it :^)

May 25, 2008 at 5:19 AMOne of the expansion sentences is "我们有十几个人" (wǒ men yǒu shí jǐ ge rén - there are more than 10 of us). I'm guessing that the 几 here functions the same as the 多 （duō）from the "More than 50" Qing Wen lesson a few days ago - is 几 used for numbers 10 or less?
