March 25, 2008 at 8:53 PMI can't take that coffee sipping sound... like fingernails on a chalkboard every time I hear it on the podcast. I noticed there was only 1 example using 也, and really didn't get the expansion needed to get a feel for when 也 is necessary as opposed to 都. Can you give a few more examples using 也？ 谢谢！

March 20, 2008 at 1:31 PMAmber Why would I ever want to do that? I so much prefer sharing.. Chinese culture breeds a mini-buffet at every meal. I'm not sure why this never caught on in the west, especial since so many Americans love a good buffet.

March 17, 2008 at 5:31 AMWhat ploy will be exposed next? Perhaps the way out-dated "Out of Gas" ploy? Which, curiously, might not be so out-dated in China now that more and more people are using cars. I never knew anyone of my generation (X) who tried that one, as it seemed a bit too "Happy Days". Shamefully, I've heard many western guys use the "Language Exhange" ploy inside China. Might be nice to see that guy get his just deserts.

March 17, 2008 at 5:09 AMBesides eating with my family, or on a date, I've almost always "split the check" (AA). In fact, most of the restaurants I frequent will ask if we will have one bill or split the check once the meal is over. Since finding a passion for mandarin and Chinese culture Ive tried to introduce sharing meals and treating friends to dinner, with mixed results. In fact, is there a way to describe ordering your own plate of food in Chinese? This to me seems to be an even greater break from tradition than paying with the AA system. Am I right?
