Wildyaks / Amber I have to agree that calling China "friendly" to the environment is a certainly a condition of economics and not of concern for the cleanliness of the planet. I also have to say that Amber is right, it's interesting that it takes the kind of poverty that exists in developing countries such as India or China to see large portions of the population actually reusing, reselling, and refurbishing decent goods that most Americans would toss in the trash. Just go to any American beach on a summer evening around sundown and count how many chairs you see in the trash because the cupholder is broken... or maybe even because a tourist was finished with the chair and couldn't imagine putting all that sand in their car for the trip home. Economics play a much bigger role in this than concern for a particular ecosystem. In fact, it's a little bit offensive think of those people who collect trash for a living as environmentalists ... they're just trying to feed their babies. It's also offensive to think of how much crap we toss in the rubbish bin in the west just because we can easily buy something faster, newer, and cleaner. I highly suggest checking out any college campus in the USA during the last week of spring semester... students move out and leave behind TVs, DVD players, DVDs, clothing, shoes... All because they're too lazy to carry those things back to mom and dad's house for the summer. 很 讨厌!

Another useful tip: If you're having trouble reading the 汉字 to create your QQ account and you're using Firefox, you might try this add-on for your browser: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3349

I'm not sure if or how it works but I found this client online that allows you to chat with all of your MSN QQ Yahoo and AIM friends in one software: http://www33.imhaha.com/webmsg/ I actually had another one like it installed on my computer before, but I can't remember the name. I'm currently downloading the recently released "preview" version of QQ for MAC. I'd be glad to let anyone know how it works after I've had some time to look into it. How about a CPOD lesson on MAC vs PC. Do people in China say MAC or do they say 苹果电脑? I recently read that an Apple store will open in Beijing in time for the Olympics.

Auntie68 Thanks for the thorough explanation. So the sentence 虽然很贵,我还想买那个车子。 Must need to be rephrased as: 虽然那个车子很贵,可是我要买. And the sentence: 无论很贵,我还想买那个车子。Would be better used as 无论多贵,我还要买那个车子。 Seems ok now?

Clay Here's an attempt to illustrate what I'm getting at. Maybe my misunderstanding is in the use of 无论 and 不管. Can you tell me what's incorrect about the sentence I've written below using 无论 ... 虽然很贵,我还想买那个车子。 无论很贵,我还想买那个车子。

Beijing vs Shanghai debate add-ons: Friendliness: Beijing wins hands down. Even the taxi drivers in Beijing became by best 哥们儿 and would so so far as to stop the meter and walk me into their favorite 包子shops to be sure I ordered the most delicious and locally authentic foods. Beijing people want you to love their city and feel that they are your friends. Shanghai people... let's just say much more 自私 and have more of a New York attitude to daily life (taxi drivers especially tend to be less friendly compared to their northern counter parts). Prices: Hotels in Beijing are cheaper, food in a restaurant in Shanghai is cheaper. Traffic: More bicycles in Beijing, more mopeds in Shanghai. Both are a nightmare for cars and the highways almost always 堵车。 People: Beijing people are tall compared to people in Shanghai and southern China, and after my first visit to Beijing I can almost always identify 北方人 upon first sight.

Can you expand on when would be the best times to use 虽然, 不管,and 无论. It appears from the dialogue that 不管and 无论 may be interchangeable, but I'm not sure that I'm correct in thinking that 虽然would also apply in most of the same situations...

I'm not sure the above question concerning how to say "better than I expected" was properly addressed. Can someone give the best ways to say the following: "better than I had imagined" Also the statement 不像我老公 (not like my husband) reminds me of a sentence structure that popped up in the Evading Nosy Questions lesson that went like this "只有你们有钱人买得起" meaning only rich people like you can afford to buy it. My questions concerning this are as follows: 1. When not attaching a specific character trait is it most common to use the 像(不像) structure, while reserving 只有你们..." for times that more description or context is needed? 2. If I just want to say "people like you are always..... ___" both structures will or will not apply?
