August 30, 2007 at 1:50 AMI was always so confused with the character 而. In this situation, it shows as a particle marker for a conjunction. I know it's off topic, but I was wondering what the Chinese band 五月天's song called 为爱而生 meant literally. How deep does the character 而 go? You do have to listen to the song though! Look for it. :)

August 23, 2007 at 3:42 AMSparechange, 会 means to be able to in terms of knowing how to do the procedure at hand or having the talent to do so. Examples include the following: "Can you speak Chinese?" "我会。" "Do you know how to drive?" "我会。" 可以 is used for situations of having time and permission to do something. Here are a couple: "Can you go to the movies with us tomorrow?" "不可以。" "Can I have a cookie?" "不可以。"
