June 7, 2013 at 3:19 PMI took the computer based HSK exam recently and it's still much more difficult than a standard 输入法 you'd have on say your home computer, regardless of which one you use. They don't let you type out more than one character at a time. So for compound words or phrases you have to type each character individually and choose the prior character before proceeding onto the next. Having always typed out more than one character at a time while using compound words and phrases (not to mention the predictor, which doesn't exist), this really tripped me up. Now that I'm aware of the system, it's still easier than handwriting, but just took a bit of getting used to.

May 20, 2013 at 3:16 PMI enjoyed this topic, it's interesting to see words where languages meld together. Quick question... concerning 芝士， 起士， and 奶酪 , which one do you think is the most commonly used? I mostly hear and use 奶酪, but that's probably because it's the only one I knew!!

I recall seeing and walking through something which people called "The Ming Tombs" while living in Beijing, but in this lesson there is the same site in Nanjing as well. Are the names different, or are they both referred to as 明孝陵?

March 23, 2011 at 7:21 PMIt's not terribly hard to get in to Beida as a foreign student, especially relative to how difficult it is as a native Chinese. As someone who studied there on an exchange program, I do receive the constant "哇， 你真厉害" responses as in this lesson... which are completely and totally undeserved. Basically as a foreigner (especially American) if you have decent grades and are willing to pay for it, you can go to practically any university in China you want.
On a side note, for any foreigner considering what university to study language in China at it would be wise to heed the comment below... Chinese people are obsessed with university rankings both there and abroad, and it may just get you a job over someone else who chose to study at a less notable university (unfortunately probably getting just as good of an education, but costing them far less).
