May 18, 2012 at 2:44 AMThanks hiewhongliang, you're very gracious. Unfortunately, the strength and timeliness of my apology is in direct proportion to my 屁股-ness。。。(would that be 我相似屁股的脾气?:-)

May 16, 2012 at 9:01 PMfloalvarez, thank you for de-escalating:-) And I think you begin to see my point. Actually, CP has done several world travel podcasts--visiting, for example, New York and London--and they did them well, presumably through research as well as personal experience. Actually, I'm not asking for specialized vocabulary, just a realistic scenario. If they're going to introduce protein into the lesson, why not take five minutes to research what an actual triathlete would say about it? That would lead to the phrase "balanced diet." It would not lead to the word magnesium. That's all I'm saying.
In the end, my harsh tone eclipsed my point. Allow me once again to humbly apologize to everyone, especially Chinese Pod.

May 16, 2012 at 12:46 PMI wasn't complaining about the price--it is obviously quite fair. But it also implies an expected level of quality and integrity to the work. So if CP did a podcast on visiting Miami that was full of inaccuracies, you wouldn't be upset that they misrepresented your city? (If you were upset, I--not being familiar with Miami--wouldn't say your view is subjective.) If you asked them for a podcast on a medical procedure and they throw something together that's blatantly off the mark, you wouldn't question their preparation? If a reader asked for a lesson on Chinese chess and they create it without bothering to look up the rules, you don't think they would have done the reader a disservice?

May 16, 2012 at 12:36 PMMark, my aggregate time in China is 18 months; I'm not saying I'm a 中国通, just brushing off your shot. Also, I'm not looking to Chinese Pod for training tips--or sport-specific vocabulary, for that matter. I've got authentic material from the Beijing Olympics for that, and I've trained and raced in China in all thee events separately and together. 但是我不是一个冠军,铁人三项就是我的爱好。
What's controversial about triathlons?

May 16, 2012 at 4:45 AMhiewhongliang, I've apologized for my harsh tone, but I stand by what I wrote. It was shoddy work, and I've offered evidence of that assessment. Your reply basically boils down to "No, it's not." I'll press you on that: What is your "evidence at hand" to the contrary?
Chinese Pod does Class A work; this dialogue should have been an easy one to write, and someone flubbed it. That's all. Admit it and drive on.
Or are you saying that at the upper intermediate level and for 125 bucks a year, I'm asking too much for a realistic dialogue? I'd even settle for a dialogue that is not misleading, if not quite realistic.

May 16, 2012 at 4:33 AMWhen the lesson was first published, I offered to write a realistic scenario for them. Crickets.

May 8, 2012 at 2:08 PMSorry, pretzellogic (and all others), I didn't mean to put words in your mouth--I extrapolated that and agree with what you've written. Jenny, the ENTIRE scenario is wrong. No triathlete would have turned down dinner, though he might have suggested a different restaurant. A realistic scenario would have had him turn down a night of dancing because he has to be in bed by 9 pm...his diet is wrong, his training is wrong, the distances and times are wrong, even the curious friend's questions are wrong. You've actually done a disservice to the listener who suggested the lesson.
Look, I love you guys and I've been a paid subscriber for years. If this had been an elementary lesson I would have given you a pass. But this is tagged as upper intermediate.

May 7, 2012 at 4:00 AMThree commenters have already called Chinese Pod out for their laziness on this lesson (Preztellogic, dave.chesson, and to a lesser extent, HuaPing). You and I have taken it an extra step and called their production of this podcast unprofessional--and I've offered a solution, that we loyal fans could easily script a realistic scenario for them. Our comments have gone unanswered.
