It turns out that the key to understanding that the 以为 applies to 看我的手机 rather than 你是我的朋友 is the 就。 In order to understand the sentence I feel I need to insert a virtual 因为 before 你是我的男朋友 but I am told that you could actually do that in Chinese.

November 28, 2013 at 11:06 AMI would have guessed that the expansion sentence: 不要以为你是我男朋友，就可以随便看我的手机 means 'you mustn't think (erroneously) that you are my boyfriend, and thus can look at my phone as you like' rather than what is translated. Am I wrong?

November 28, 2013 at 10:33 AMIn my experience(!) the way Chinese I have known/know like to break up is to '不理‘ （buli) their erstwhile boyfriend (girlfriend?). This means: to totally ignore any attempts at communication by the boyfriend. This means they don't have to give any explanation or risk any tough scenes.
