June 21, 2009 at 6:53 AMThanks for trying to answer my question. However, your answer points out my problem!!
You have ".....because in Chinese structure the object also has to follow immediately after the verb. Therefore, the verb is repeated twice..".
So how can 他买了几十年彩票 be ok? Here the verb is followed by 了几十年, not directly by the object 彩票?

Thanks for your answer but you missed the point of my question.
I was making an analogy with Pete's example in this thread 他开车开得很快 where the verb must be repeated, and the sentence in the lesson which does not repeat the verb 我买了几十年彩票.
It appears that you cannot say 他开了得很快汽车. But you can say 我买了几十年彩票 and there presumably can say 他开了几十小时汽车 or can you? - It doesn't quite sound right to me。
So was wondering whether you can say 我买了彩票买了几十年了...

I am confused about this sentence:
我买了几十年彩票,终于中奖了。
Wǒ mǎi le jǐshí nián cǎipiào, zhōngyú zhòngjiǎng le.
Can you say
我买了彩票买了几十年了,。。。?
I am probably mixing up structures

I didn't realise that 几十年彩票 was 'an object phrase'. I apparently rather naively thought wrongly that 彩票 was the object, and that 几十年 was some sort of adverbial phrase of time.
How do I recognise an object phrase when I see one?
