When I put the question, I was thinking along the same lines as you (see my comment below), but any treatment that sets off a chain of thought is valuable. In another lesson John and Dilu pointed out nuanced differences between 看到 and 看 or 听 and 听到 (also 听见).

Would these sentences both be right?

他在酒店睡觉 。Two syllables 'cos it sounds better

宝宝睡了。  One syllable plus complement to explain what's going on.
