April 26, 2009 at 9:47 PMLight! Glad you had fun, see, backpacking isn't scary, right?
I had a similar experience of not really learning much vocab, but it's all good practise. It's fun listening to people talking about you without them realising you can 听得懂 a bit :)

April 16, 2009 at 6:15 PMHaving seen all those varieties of 桂林米粉,I am now wondering whether 桂林米粉 refers to generic "fat rice noodles in soup" or a specific recipe?

April 15, 2009 at 8:03 PMGosh, I'm now finding the English translations need translation into my kind of English! Haha, I've never heard of the phrase "to flip people off", I know it as "give them the finger". I just imagine human tiddlywinks with the former...

Posted on: The Double 了 (le) phenomenon
April 7, 2009 at 6:36 PMPete, yeah, it is devisilish. I shall get it one day. It's kind of sinking in, bit by bit. I like the section in my grammar book that says "and on the following sentences we stick 了 on the end just because". :D

April 6, 2009 at 7:52 PMWhat are fraud proof numbers? Can you just write the numbers rather than characters?
Posted on: The Double 了 (le) phenomenon
April 3, 2009 at 8:24 PMGosh, I've listened to this QW a million times it seems, yet I still can't remember the rule. I take it that in this QW, you have to put in a number in the sentence, right? Cos I get confused with this concept of the 了 on the end meaning a "situation change".
In a sentence without a number then it, e.g.
我喝酒了 vs 我喝了酒了, then in the first sentence it could be happening now (and it's just started from non-drinking), but can it also have finished? The second one seems clearer, where the drinking is over, and this there is a new non-drinking situation happening. But this doesn't continue on into the future, like this QW where you need a number? Am kind of thinking out loud here. I will actually remember this one day.

March 24, 2009 at 5:59 PMHenning, the funny thing with independence is that in the UK, Scotland is always making noises about independence. I've always grown up thinking I am British, and it is really irritating having "Englishness" thrust upon me by grumpy Scots. No one asked me!

April 27, 2009 at 8:26 AMLight, I never had the guts to comment back in Chinese. I even once was on a 20 hour train journey listening to people talk about me, but after the first 15-20 mins, it's starting to get a bit late to say "oh, by the way..."
