But I'm not sure why this lesson was classified as Upper Intermediate. Far too easy for that, wasn't it? I thought the dialogue, vocabulary, and explanation were solidly of intermediate difficulty.

May 19, 2014 at 1:37 PMIn the States, the issue is 'fair use', which is vaguely and contextually defined (necessarily so). The issues are complex, but what you are asking for (republishing the whole article verbatim) would clearly be illegal, since the article is not explicitly 'public domain'. However, if CPod were to modify the article considerably, editing and inserting large amounts of commentary essential for their teaching purposes, they would probably have a good case for fair use.
Regarding the issue of printing: it is legal to print a copy of a newspaper article if it is for personal use.
(By the way, I am not a lawyer, but an educator who regularly attends copyright workshops on campus for professional reasons.) Hopefully, CPod will be gracious enough to explain to you if the same criteria apply in China.

May 18, 2014 at 11:49 AMEven though the article is on a website that can be copied, it is still protected by digital copyright laws. Just because it 'can' be copied doesn't mean that it is legal to do so! Whether one makes money from it is irrelevant to copyright laws; they simply determine who has the rights to reproduce the work and under what circumstances. Individuals get away with it with relative impunity (usually), but a commercial site is unlikely to be able to do so.

But "dàngàn" pinyin is incorrect. When the second syllable of a binome begins with a vowel it must be preceded with an apostrophe: "dang'an". Otherwise, it should be read: "dan-gan". This apostrophe is an integral part of correct pinyin spelling (not an option)! :)

April 19, 2014 at 1:10 PMI think "suggest" might be too 'soft' a translation for 劝! Most dictionaries translate it as "urge", "advise", or even "exhort". While it doesn't imply success, 劝 does imply a stronger commitment to the advice than a mere suggestion (jiànyì 建议, tíyì 提议), doesn't it? If you translate it as "suggest" how would you explain the difference between 劝 and 建议?

If I might make a suggestion: keep it natural and in living context if possible. No reciting scripts while smiling into the camera, and don't just label objects. These old fashioned techniques defeat the purpose of video lessons: to experience natural communication for those learners who, for whatever reason, can't live in a Chinese speaking environment. At any rate, this is what I would find most (and least) helpful.
