February 12, 2014 at 9:44 PMYes, there are plenty of 'pocket tissues' of all brands in the U.S. All supermarkets and drugstores carry them. In the colder states they're a necessity for your 擤鼻涕 emergencies! 抽纸 are also very common. I'm guessing that Greg probably just never used them, and so never noticed them.

I thought ChinesePod was all about providing something younger and more imaginative than the typical cheesy old-fashioned language lesson. At least, that's how you started. It would be a pity to see you become stodgy and lose your edge. Apologies if I'm being too blunt.

January 5, 2014 at 1:37 PMActually, it is a 'coverb': a full verb but used in an auxiliary way with another verb. Chinese often uses coverbs where other languages use prepositions. (For example, 到 dào 'to go towards' for 'to', 离 lí 'to be distant' for 'from', 用 yòng 'to use' for 'with'.) Of course, when translating prepositions must be used to make the translation grammatical, so coverbs can be thought of as functioning like prepositions.

December 9, 2013 at 2:12 PMActually, I don't think it's an Americanism either. I can't find any dictionary (standard, idiomatic, contemporary, slang) that lists this meaning. It looks like the idiosyncratic usage of the particular translator.

What about 赞扬? I've come across this more often. How does it compare with the four words you discussed in the lesson?
Also, does 夸奖 (kuājiǎng) have any negative sense? (boasting, or excessive praise?)

November 27, 2013 at 1:51 PMThe waiter at one point says 好 and adds an unusually enthusiastic "èi!". This addition wasn't in the written dialogue or addressed in the lesson. I'm curious about this expressive particle as I have never heard it before. Any comments or explanations?
