August 1, 2010 at 7:15 PMI am curious if anyone memorizes the dialogues. I met someone recently who spent a lot of time in Germany in the sixties as a translator for the Army, and he said the way he and his fellow army translators were trained back then was to start off with the memorization of dialogues. I have been trying it lately and it seems to certainly work the brain in a different ways. Is there any reserach on this?I also tend to agree, however, this may not be worth halving Qing Wen for. There is already a discussion group on studying Chinese. I agree with xiaophil that I could come up with a very long list for QIng Wen topics if some are needed.

July 21, 2010 at 3:33 PMThanks for the article. Do you think there is any difference in attitudes about sexuality between regions of China? I have to say my students in Chengdu seemed on the whole more conservative than those I met in Beijing and Shanghai. Certainly nothing like a Time magazine article I read a few years ago titled, "Sex Please, We're Young and Chinese.

Many of my Chinese students (undergrads) related how their parents had told them similar stories when they were young. Although the details varied the themes were remarkably the same--the child plucked from waste, dirt and destitution by the parent. Is this a common practice among Chinese parents?

As a philosophy professor in America who spent two years as a volunteer with the Peace Corps teaching in Chengdu, I always found philosophy more respected in China than in the U.S. --which, granted, isn't saying much.

June 30, 2010 at 2:26 PMWell, if anyone has any thoughts on this one, I would appreciate hearing from you, either here or on the blog (yes, will be blogging about this one). Also, why does the woman immediately make the leap from you are very shy (很腼腆) to you are honest and dependable (老实点的男人比较可靠)? I guess I would have to ask the writer about this one. In the West we might assume if you are shy you are a "nice" guy. Is that something like what is intended here? Anyway, thanks. I often find the cultural elements of the podcasts are at least as interesting as the language lessons.
