@john actually Chinese people don't seem to do the 'pink for girls' thing. We often go out with my son dressed in combat trousers, blue Thomas the Tank Engine tops, etc and then people come up and say 'oooh, look at xiao meimei! Isn't she cute!"

@hape:

We are in the process of removing non-Newbie lessons from the Confucius Institute site, but this means changing the terms of our agreement with the Hanban, which takes a little time. It should be taken care of shortly, but in the meantime let me apologise for the inconsistency.

In future, only Newbie audio without transcripts will be available on confuciusinstitute.net, in line with ChinesePod itself.

perle - that's strange. Audio is playing fine here. What browser are you using? And are you getting the problem when playing through the built in player on the page?

This is one of our earliest lessons. As our lessons have evolved, we have added more and more information behind the scenes to make things like the exercises possible. However, not all the old lessons are supported yet. Try the newer lessons if you really like the exercises.

laodai - you can search pinyin without tone marks. Just use a number to indicate the tone. shi1, shi2, shi3, shi4

mikeinjubei, We've had dreams of a grammar resource like this since the very beginning, so this baby's been on the way for a lot longer than 9 months. It took an uber-linguist like John to actually pull it off though, and he's been working on it for over a year now (what you can't see yet are over 3,000 entries at the word level which will be rolled out in the coming months). Way to go John! Awesome work and there's nothing else like it on the web.

Hi Bazza, Yep - still doing some last minute tweaking, but the grammar guide will go live in a couple of hours.
