November 22, 2007 at 3:04 PMGood lesson. Today I got several texts from students wishing me a happy Thanksgiving....but I'm Canadian and ours was several weeks ago. Speaking of Chinese mashed potatoes, by sheer coincidence I just ordered 土豆泥 (tu3 dou4 ni2) at a busy little Chinese restaurant here on the recommendation of another student and it was more like a big, loose, deep fried potato pancake. Crispy on the outside, mushy on the inside. Delicious, but nothing like my idea of mashed potatoes.

November 9, 2007 at 1:35 PMAfter more than ten tries I got this lesson downloaded, and five different proxies later I got to goulniky's supplemental link, but it was well worth it.

October 30, 2007 at 3:07 AMThe peep hole for your door is a 猫眼 - cat eye. Maybe the modem sounds like a cat purring? I've always used 线 when I needed to get a cable. What is the difference between 线 and 电缆?

October 29, 2007 at 2:37 PMMy main tech headaches in China are related to the viruses that populate the computers in nearly every school where I teach. I would love to know how to get zhen ban software and not pay three times the price as back in Canada (I guess by bargaining like the girl in the lesson, sigh) - don't like buying dao ban.

October 28, 2007 at 2:11 PMWow, this is the most useful lesson in some time...and I haven't even listened to it yet. Thanks, goulniky!

October 16, 2007 at 1:55 PMactually, when registering you want to speak as little chinese as possible : ) cops can get nosy. I searched for a lesson on ordering drinking water to no avail. Need expressions like "I don't need a dispenser, the one I have is fine, I would rather pay cash instead of buying the tickets. What are your delivery hours and how long does it take?"

September 13, 2007 at 3:39 AMHmm, there are in fact lots of spherical watermelons here in China but the majority are oval. I am also wondering if 圆 covers all cases.

November 23, 2007 at 6:06 AMHad no idea what the 泥 (ni2) character meant when I ordered the potatoes; I had just asked a student what was good to eat at that place and then was pretty amused later in the evening to find the same term used for mashed potatoes. Good thing the real deal are easy to make. Now to figure out gravy. My first guess was 肉酱 (rou4 jiang4), but wouldn't that be a sauce with bits of meat in it? Google has it as 肉汁 (rou4 zhi1), can anyone confirm?
