October 18, 2007 at 4:40 PMApparently Chinesers did invent movable-type printing also - "Around 1040, the first known movable type system was created in China by Bi Sheng out of porcelain. Metal movable type was first invented in Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty (around 1230). Neither movable type system was widely used, one reason being the enormous Chinese character set." But don't worry, the koreans did bring the world bibimbap and bulgogi.

October 18, 2007 at 4:24 PMFreaky, You won't lose those 'R's .. they will come back to haunt you over and over until you are actually quite happy to have them. however, shouting '服务员儿儿' across the restaurant through cupped hands... definitely is something you will have to learn not to do once you leave.

October 18, 2007 at 3:35 PMyeh, it's in all of china that you have to register.. and also don't be alarmed if the police come around to your apartment and start asking you personal questions about your 'relationships' (esp with chinesers) it's more out of curiousity rather than formality and they soon go away. I used to give them a cup of tea and one of those curious tiramasu cake things that they sell in Hymall.. and have a chat about anything. Oh, and I like the narrative format. It's a good length for my trip home on the tube... and I even plugged CPod in my chinese class, people seemed interested.

October 16, 2007 at 4:14 PM*Option 1* - be kind - say 'Sprechen Sie Deutsch?' and look confused. For some reason they don't think Germans can speak English and start talking to you in Chinese. *Option 2* - Don't be kind - keep saying 'sorry i don't understand you, are you speaking English?' they will look broken like a sad puppy and walk away. Warning - this will probably haunt you for a couple of days as the person has probably spent every waking hour learning english relentlessly for 8 years. I'd urge you all to go for option 1... okay, back to my listening.

October 16, 2007 at 11:29 AMI often wondered why you aren't allowed to give your kids cigarettes, because they might get cancer and die; basically child abuse. But if you feed your kids so many calories per date that they are about the size of a small family apartment and then they get heart disease, cancer and then die; that's 'genetics'. I say ban cars and tv.. lets all get back on bikes like our chinese friends and playing majiang outside in the cold. Maybe we should have a lesson on the topic 'friends with issues'.

October 15, 2007 at 3:37 PMWell, most of my chineser-friends-who-are-girls(I'm not a lothario) i know seem to want to be curvy nowardays with being boney & skinny not as interesting as it used to be. However, I did teach stewardesses in china for a while and they were weighed and measured every month to make sure they weren't any more than a waif. This is all a usual by-product of cultural change, and fingers crossed all the girls take up kung-fu and then no one will dare say anything either way. PS. To be honest the western perception of morbidly-obese being normal, and healthily 'thin' being wrong isn't exactly a great model for the rest of the world either. I'll get back to my Double-fried belly pork and shut up now.

October 18, 2007 at 11:19 PMruban, who knows.. i might be gay and in denial. I'll ask the wife if she cares. everyone else, oh, but horse riding is super popular in north china, I used to go riding mongolian horses with my friend. It was awesome and i don't think cycles are ever going to die in china, or where are they going to park all the cars?
