October 15, 2007 at 8:34 AMWhy is it that chinese kids get to learn poetry and I pretty much spent 7 years learning to make martian bases out of lego and card-board?

October 15, 2007 at 11:27 AMSputnik, you are 100% right. Moreover in the western world it's clear that 'innovation' is cherished over a lot of other things in our educational system (such as rote learning and even grammar) and I tried to reflect this within my classes, so the students could have a glimpse of another way of learning. Having a long history of inventing weird and wonderful things the chinese students that I met seemed not dislike students in the UK, just the teaching methods haven't quite caught up yet. I'm sure within a few years China will be not unlike other nations, churning out new inventions of a bizarre nature for the world to wonder at. Just look how quickly their movie industry and artists have progressed.
