Posted on: Buying Fresh Fish in the Market
December 30, 2017 at 11:42 AMI believe perch are exclusively freshwater fish, whereas bass come in either freshwater or saltwater varieties. Thanks for teaching the words for "wild" and"farmed." We're trying to eat only wild caught fish, but I previously had no idea how to say that in Chinese.

December 24, 2017 at 12:26 PMGreat lesson! I've always been confused between 得 and 地. And at long last I finally understand why Teresa Teng sings "di" instead of "de."

December 9, 2017 at 10:53 AMThe pre-intermediate level is an excellent addition. Thanks!
I also want to add that I'm really glad when Fi explains China/Taiwan differences in vocabulary.
Posted on: Describing Beauty
September 15, 2017 at 11:26 AMA few years ago when my wife and I were traveling in China, a couple times a complete stranger said to me "is this your wife? She is very pretty (真漂亮)." I think here in the U.S., if I were to say that to someone, it would seem very awkward. So I was wondering if there's something subtly different in Chinese culture that makes this acceptable, or perhaps they did this only because we were obviously foreignors. Also, would it be rarer for a woman to approach a couple and say "is this your husband? He is very handsome." That never happened to us (although I'm quite aware of an obvious possible reason for it
)

Posted on: Is There a Service Charge?
April 12, 2017 at 2:28 AMAh yes, that makes sense. But in the U.S. I guess I would say 小费 for a tip, right? It's funny that here in Los Angeles we do often go to restaurants where only Mandarin is spoken.

April 8, 2017 at 9:36 AMAre “服務費“ and “小費” the same?
Posted on: I Can't Afford Cake
April 1, 2017 at 9:12 AMI remember some of those cakes in Taipei department stores looked amazing! But I didn't try any of them, because (ha ha) 我吃不起.

January 6, 2018 at 11:22 AMI'm glad that I learned the phrase 馬奶酒, so that I can avoid accidentally ordering it if it's onthe menu. :) But, seriously, that was a fun lesson!
