May 20, 2009 at 3:23 AMOn the expansion sentence, 我爷爷都七十多岁了..., I am guessing that 都 is used in the sense of "already," is that correct? Or would it be closer to "even though?" The meaning of the sentence is obvious, but I'm not sure if I got the nuances right.

May 19, 2009 at 12:21 AM@miantiao, actually the torch relay went through the U.S., albeit on an abbreviated run as described here. Basically, everyone got their protest in, but the torch bypassed them. I supposed you could call that a cancellation of sorts but, based upon past assaults on runners, it seemed justified.
I think it also bears pointing out that the Tibetans in France acted disgracefully. From where I stand, assaulting a young woman in a wheelchair hardly qualifies as a legitimate form of protest. (I'm guessing you don't disagree.) Now if they had jumped the blue-suited guys, that would have been fine by me.
Still, the silver lining is that there probably won't a a repeat for some time to come, so we put to focus where it belongs; on the athletics.

"I wish everyone would stop getting caught up in the BS and realize what is important in this world."
What's important about the world is a bit broad of a topic; however, what's important about the Olympics is the competition and the athletes. As far as I concerned, the shorter the opening ceremony/halftime show/etc. the better.

May 18, 2009 at 12:16 PMI don't think 老公/老婆 have any negative connotations. That's mostly just our youth-oriented culture speaking (i.e. old is bad). At the same time, I don't know if it's intended to be romantic either. Rather, just a connotation of love in the sense of family and familiarity.
