November 24, 2008 at 1:58 PMI think that crowding in line helps forestall cutters. Personally, I just keep my head down and, if somebody starts to push in front of me, I attempt a preemptive wedge.

November 24, 2008 at 4:42 AMI always get corrected for overusing 请, especially at home. For example, if I say "请遞過來" at the dinner table, I'm told that the 請 sounds too formal and unnatural. Instead, I'm supposed to say "遞過來", no 請 or 麻煩你 necessary.
I don't want to suggest that others emulate me, but now I usually avoid 請 except for formal situations.

November 23, 2008 at 2:14 AMhaikeyi and nice84, I believe the intent is to force people (such as myself) to drop the English crutch, not to deny anybody content. Indeed, one could argue that Cpod's advanced lessons cheat somewhat by including definitions in English and pinyin.

November 23, 2008 at 12:09 AMRecognizing that this isn't Englishpod, I've always thought "zee" was a French/Quebec bastardization of "the." (e.g. see Pepe le Pew ala Bugs Bunny.) Can't say I've ever heard it in the U.S.
I've taught a couple of mainlanders to drive and found that the biggest problem is getting them to drive over 40 mph on freeways/highways.

November 17, 2008 at 2:16 PMHenning, I've developed some English and Chinese terms for the change(s). However, I think that their usage would get me banned from the site.
Maybe I'm I turning into 老王/老汤姆? Students just starting Excel don't mind the changes. However, they're also just figuring out the sum(A1.B1) command, so maybe there's hope.

November 28, 2008 at 8:54 PMchangbiyuan, I suppose I classify food poisoning as something serious, possibly life threatening, involving a stomach pump. I've only experienced that once, and that was in the U.S.
Diarrhea and the like is certainly unpleasant, but I don't regard it as "poisoning;" though I do remember a very unpleasant, two-hour border crossing at Tijuana where I had to jump in and out of the car to run to the porta-potties.
