October 13, 2007 at 8:43 AMA skill women need as much as men. For one, when you go out with a bunch of girls, we also do the fighting, don't we? And being a (foreign) women among a mixed group of people, it's not a forgone conclusion that one of the men pays, not in my experience anyways

October 13, 2007 at 8:01 AMIn the expansion section it says in one sentence: 多做这方面的练习 What is 方面 doing here? Why not say 多多练习? The full sentence is: 我没有什么绝招,主要是多做这方面的练习,熟能生巧。 (I don't have any kind of unique skill. The main thing is practice like this--practice makes perfect.)

October 13, 2007 at 4:39 AMJust imagine this conversation between two hard core politicians... A: 先生,你很诚实。 (Xiānsheng, nǐ hěn chéngshí.) Sir, you are very honest. B: 哪里 哪里 (nǎli nǎli). A & B: 哈哈.... I can just seem them crack up at the joke...

October 13, 2007 at 3:08 AMAbsolutely agree with Dave and Kyle. If the locals tip, then we should. But since they don't and don't expect, then we shouldn't. It ruins the market. And of course, a tourist coming from the west will think that shoe-shiner just did a great job for less than 20cents. So why not pay him double? It ruins the market for foreigners who live in China and want to pay fair, but don't want to have to pay double... It raises expectations and enforces the image of the filthy rich westerners. The situation may be quite different in east coast cities. But tipping is definitely not the norm in China.

October 12, 2007 at 1:27 PMYes, definitely got to slurp your soup and make lots of eating noises! Some of my local friends felt uncomfortable eating with foreigners because there was no sound to confirm that they enjoyed their food...

October 12, 2007 at 12:40 PMMeanwhile we could try a recipe given to me by Tibetan woman. Black tea or hot water with a lot (and really a lot) of brown sugar. It tastes good. Not sure it helps...

October 12, 2007 at 10:40 AMchinacolin, unfortunately that is changing. I have been hanging out with college girls enough to know. It also needs to be said, that many a girl who is by no means fat, is called "fat" or considers herself fat, because she does not have a barbie figure - or the Chinese equivalent of it. It is true that obesity is not as much of a problem here than in the west, but the pressure to have a certain figure is very, very real, believe me.

October 13, 2007 at 10:51 AMYes, that's what I thought, too. But she says that she has no unique skill. What is the fang mian referring to, then? Is there something implied? Do I have to assume that maybe somebody told that person that she is gifted in xy and she says, no, it's not a unique skill of hers, but one she acquired by practice?
