chinkerfly, John said somewhere else that he has not found a suitable term to translate "cheesy" and finds it difficult to explain the concept. The joy of language. Sometimes there is just no way such things can be translated. I heard the Brazilians don't have a word for "boring". But I am not sure that this is correct...

It may be that people in China are much more likely to tell you that you are "pang" and that it is not as big a deal as in many Western countries. However, Chinese have now adopted that stressful and destructive culture to have to be slim at all costs - especially young women. I wonder how many college students in China suffer from bulimia or annorexia (don't know how it's spelt).

I am not sure I am ever going to need this vocabulary... mchanatwork, I know of at least one Asian who thinks single eyelids are much more beautiful than double (or triple) eyelids. And I agree. Or rather, I find it strange that we always consider beautiful what is not naturally give to us. White Westerners love their sun tan (if they can get one), dark people think white is beautiful. I admire and envy the Asian women for their smooth skin, and they probably want my double eyelids... And interesting too, how in all corners of the world women (and men) want to look their best.

Funny this whole discussion. Why would Nicolas even bother to read our meaningless, inappropriate, fallible comments? What could he possible gain? And what do we gain by being drawn into this discussion. It's Mandarin on your terms... Nobody forces Nicolas to read our faulty Chinese sentences. And nobody forces any of us to go on and on and on and on about a subject that really is not that relevant. It's Mandarin on your terms! Let's move on guys, this was fun in the beginning. It's now getting a bit boring.

And then had to explain to him what baoxiao is...
