September 12, 2007 at 5:09 AMI never knew what a ninjia was until this lesson... I am familiar however with 黑社会 since they once had to put our university under curfew because some students had gotten in a fight with some 黑社会人and the school was worried they would come and take revenge...

September 12, 2007 at 3:12 AMThat's a pretty drastic measure to get rid of a person the Cpod team is tired of making lessons of.. Fun one, though, I admit

September 12, 2007 at 2:39 AMYep, even Chengdu. It's true, you probably won't understand the local dialect. But they will understand you quite likely. It's one of the most livable cities in China, I believe. People have time ... Although, as all other cities in China, it has changed very, very fast over the last 10 years and not all are changes I appreciate. I miss the old lanes with the two-story tiled houses...

September 11, 2007 at 7:18 AM老家 I think is a pretty strong concept for most people, except maybe immigration countries like the States, Australia, New Zealand. But even there, I would not be surprised to find that even they have strong feelings towards one place they call "home". I've met Chinese who call Tibetan places their laojia and no way have they lived here more than one or two generations. Which is interesting. because for most their is a connection to that place of the ancestors. However, I guess recent Chinese history might have messed up some of that for some people...

September 10, 2007 at 7:09 AMVietnam was colonized by the French (if I am not mistaken) not too far back. That's why there is a coffee culture. And they also have great bread everywhere. Not the same in China. You can get iced coffee at Starbucks of course...

September 10, 2007 at 7:06 AMHow about you turn down that background music, when talking. Am I the only one who finds it distracting? Good qing wen, though.

September 9, 2007 at 2:50 AMbinghe, that's news to me that Canada gave us ice hockey?! I know, of course, that they are right up top. And yes, we do like Canadians...

September 8, 2007 at 8:54 AMdmartind, It seems to me that you have to either be allergic or not drink "for religious reasons" to get away with it in China - at least around here. Don't know that it is applicable all over China. But I have had to attend quite a number of these official dinners, where you absolutely have to drink. Sometimes there are one or two guys who will toast with coke or soya milk or what not. They have taken a (religious) vow not to drink and that is respected.

September 8, 2007 at 6:29 AM现学现卖,isn't that what we were taught for immediatley put to use what one has learnt? I've just had a phone call from my colleague (local) who is having her laptop fixed at a computer repair store. After I studied this lesson two days ago, I was able to understand that her laptop seems to have some virus 笔记本好相中了病毒。The system needs to be "reinstalled" (is that what we say in English?). 要重启系统,and then maybe the problem of the keyboard will be solved 在要看键盘的问题. It feels good to be able to follow a telephone conversation about a subject I struggle with even in English...
