Thanks for the help guys. I found an add-on for firefox that lets me lie and say I am using IE. Seems to work so far. Will consider virtual box if all else fails.

CPod, I would like to know these as well. Additionally I have some other questions.

1) In Chinese, 亲爱的 (qīn ài de) means 'dear'. But can we use 亲爱的 in a formal sense? Or is it usually reserved for things like 'my dear friend Bob'? If we can't use it this way, what is a good substitute for 'dear'?

2) What is the best way to say 'best regards' or 'sincerely yours' at the end of a letter?

Wow, that sounds cool. Is it overwhelmingly techish to do that? I can figure out most things, but there are limits.

That's really good to know. Thanks again!

Thanks for responding a1pi2

Regarding this:

"Won't changing your user agent string fix your problem for you? If you have Firefox tell the web sites that it is IE, then everything should just work. (Unless the web sites are horribly broken IE 6 based sites.)"

I have no idea! I haven't ever heard of this (not surprising as I am pretty good at using a computer on the surface level, but the nuts and bolts can confuse me). This is an easy procedure I take it? If so, I will start googling.

Okay, here is a question for the tech poddies out there.  In China, there are many websites that require the user to use Internet Explorer to do certain transactions.  I would like to switch totally over to Linux.  I have heard that if one uses a program called Wine, one can install IE onto Linux.  Does anybody know if this works well?  It sounds very dubious.

I can't wait to get around to this. I really like the ones that deal with using technology. From my experience, it's the sort of thing that Mandarin language courses in China expect students to learn on their own.

Actually, I'm wondering if there is a standard for deciding what gets taught in language courses in China. I always assumed that beyond teaching the most basic of the basic Chinese words, the writers of textbooks in China simply write about what they want to say (and just maybe throw in a bit of propaganda). Okay, I'm digressing...

Wow, that's amazing. Your sister's trip to Mongolia and the silk route wasn't a bad alternative.

Glad we got that burning question cleared up. Thanks a lot for that. The next time I hear someone say, "What's up with the advice thing?" I can tell them all about it.
