I'm not anti the new series. I'm just very pro Qing Wen. If you guys are having trouble coming up with new lessons, I can write up a very long list of ideas--no problem at all. Also, the Amber lessons were a pretty good start to this series, but you guys have come a long way since then. So what I mean is, it would be very much okay to revisit those. At any rate, a reduction of Qin Wens is a real bummer.

Baba, thanks for replying. I had to use my phone to write the above, and I'm afraid it is a bit too short. I'm glad you gave a thorough answer. By the way, I don't disagree with what you said, but I think duzi is most like belly. In English, we might say 'he has a big belly (as in the exterior appearance),' or we might say 'my belly hurts (as in the interior stomach).' Duzi could be used in both of these situations.

Good question. I would like to know the answer as well. This is what I would say:

我在第四号出口，靠近自动扶梯的底部。

wǒ zài dìsì hào chūkǒu, kaòjìn zìdòngfútī de dǐbù

I'm at exit 4, near the bottom of the escalator.

To say 'at the top of the escalator,' just replace 底部 with 顶端 dǐngduān.

I figured these out with a little research. I don't know if these are right, let alone natural.

At the Subway shop I frequent in Shanghai, I hear 'cheese' most often. 奶酪 is what is written on the signs. It seems to me 奶酪 is occasionally heard, or perhaps that is only what I tell myself as I don't ever say 'cheese.' My Subway experience is total Chinese time.

Many interesting points that I can relate to. I have to speed off, but I just wanted to ask, isn't guo2yu3 the Taiwanese word for Mandarin? I kinda wonder if that bothers some mainlanders? Just curious...

Just so I know, which one would be more appropriate in England:

One, no matter the other person's appearance, assume they speak English, and then try another language if English doesn't work.

Two, make a judgment as to which nationality the other person is from appearance, try to speak that language if one knows the language, when all else fails, use English.

Number one is so ingrained in me that when I was in Spain, I saw an Asian looking fellow. I tried to speak to him in broken Spanish for about a minute while trying to get directions. I finally asked him if he was Chinese. He chuckled. He was in fact Chinese. Things went smoother for me after that.

I had another weird Chinese moment in Spain. I was sitting on a bench with my Chinese wife. I Chinese girl came up to me and asked me directions in English. My wife was next to me! I don't know if this means anything at all to our discussion, but I did think it was funny.
