I don't think I would say it myself, but that certainly isn't because I always speak in an intelligent manner. There are lots of grammar mistakes and folksy blabber to be found coming out of my mouth. I guess I am just adding nothing to this thread :-)

June 21, 2010 at 2:00 AMI have come across Chinese, including at least one Mandarin teacher, who pronounce 'ui' like 'wee' as you described. The standard way should be 'way', at least that is what I have been told by several other Chinese who I trust..

June 24, 2010 at 12:48 AMWell, I think you made a good case that at least some people say it. It's kind of a tough call in your position. Since CPod tries to keep things natural sounding instead of bookish, for practical reasons, you have no choice but to translate words into the way you would naturally say it. The problem is that the English world is vast, and you can't please them all. I'm sure I would have a chuckle if the translator was from, say, Manchester and interjected his/her brand of colloquial English.
I do recall my first ever Mandarin textbooks teaching me this:
哎呀，太可惜！
Damn, what a great pity!
Because of that crazy translation, I refused for the longest time to say 哎呀 and 太可惜.
