February 17, 2013 at 10:42 AMMy surname is Small. So I just translate it as 小 and my given name is 熊 because I like bears, look like a bear, and my dads nick name is Bear. So he would be 大熊。 所以我的中文名字是小熊。 许多朋友们不喜欢我的名字,但是有些人想很可爱。 :)

February 7, 2013 at 12:50 AMI sometimes finding myself avoiding words because I'm afraid of what might accidently come out of my mouth. For instance the word cao. Does this happen with anyone else?

February 7, 2013 at 12:41 AMThen don't accuse me of being so righteous about it. Its not about having an opinion contrary to mine or not. IT IS A FACT. THE WORD HOMOSEXUAL IS OFFENSIVE TO SOME PEOPLE. So why not use a term that is not? I don't care if you believe me or not. Go ask one of your gay friends. I'm sure they would be more than happy to explain it to you.

February 6, 2013 at 5:54 AMI didn't say that John was attacking gays, however, Homosexual has certain connotations that the word gay doesn't. Heterosexual is not a pejorative term because you are in the sexual majority that have never been attacked on being a "heterosexual."
It isn't what the word means or it's dictionary definition. Homosexual has been used as a derogatory term for years. So much so that even when used on it's own it is now seen by many as a derogatory term due to it's usage history.
It has become derogatory since it's being used more and more by elected officials who are trying to limit their freedom. So it's become a loaded word, sort of. When I hear somebody refer to gay people as homosexual, nine times out of ten, they're being bigots.
If you ask the majority of gays, they will in fact probably tell you that homosexual is not the preferred term. Its not about attacking anyone, its about bringing to light the preferred term.

February 6, 2013 at 12:29 AMbecause homosexual is a clinical term and mostly used by those who are opposed to gay rights. The term has a pejorative connotation, therefore should be avoided. Maybe you don't feel offended by the word "heterosexual" because it was never used as a pejorative term in the first place. There's nothing wrong with adding a litte care to your speech in order not to offend the people around you. Plus the word gay is easier to say.
