Sorry (especially as this wasn't even part of the dialogue) but it looks like a distinction between English english and American English. In the former perpendicular  means at 90 degrees to the ground, vertical - hard going for any cab.

When the podcast is totally dependent on the accompanying photos (as in this case) there seems little point in posting it until the images are also available.
