March 31, 2012 at 3:28 AMConfused. You say yizhi for one continuous episode, and zongshi for multiple separate ones yet use yizhi for constantly listening to Qing wen and wearing shoes.

March 3, 2012 at 7:48 PMWolf not greedy? How about the English expression "to wolf your food" or "to wolf something down". For poscasts like this a PDF of the expressions referred to would be brilliant.

February 9, 2012 at 2:59 AMHi John. In this part of the world "handicapped" is totally non-PC and unacceptable. As a cataloguer in an academic librarymore than 20 years ago one of my jobs was to change all of the subject headings containing the word "handicapped" to "disablec". Unfortunately at that time it also meant changing every individual catalogue record!

January 28, 2012 at 3:12 AMDoes the importance of this vary region to region. As a westerner part of a Taiwanese family relationships seem more likely to be described in relation to specific family members e.g. third siter;s husband. Ayway, a chart of all this shouldn't be too hard for you guys to produce and help get things in perspective.y

January 21, 2012 at 12:17 AMinteresting. I had first hand experience of this in Taiwan, car vs scooter. To me it seemed the scooter was totally wrong but the guy wound up on the pavement rubbing his leg and carrying on for quite a while and my brother-in-law, who is actually a doctor of western medicince, did finally peel off some notes to settle the matter. To me, a Westerner, it seemed a ritual to extort money, both parties recognizing thisand simply going through the motions.

January 12, 2012 at 1:33 AMRe the English rather than the Chinese these days it seems to be very non-PC (plitically correct) in the English-speaking West to use the definite article 'the' when referring to one's wife, implying treatment as a posession. 'Your wife', 'my wife' fine but ' 'the wife' no.

September 18, 2010 at 3:50 AMBrilliant! The thought of missing out on this sort of material was what made me so frustrated a few weeks ago at the thought that Qing Wen might go.
