You bring up a good point. I should do more reading and less chatting on this forum. I've only read through the Middle Chinese sections in Shēngyùnxué; I know very little about Old Chinese. But I was taught in a linguistics course that there were no tones in Old Chinese. Many reconstructions are based on this idea. Here is a (free) thesis that summarizes everything up until the 1990s very well (the summaries are worth a read).

There were word groups in Old Chinese that were semantically and phonetically interconnected. There are some books in English on this topic. Perhaps, you can read them. If you are a university student, you can probably get them through you library.
