Drone Attack Hits Saudi Oil Pipeline

A drone strike allegedly coordinated by Iranian-allied Houthi rebels in Yemen hit a Saudi oil pipeline on Tuesday. The drone attack occurred less than two days after the sabotage of two Saudi oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. Tensions in the region are rising as the U.S. reimpose economic sanctions against Iran, Saudi Arabia’s regional rival.

According to Khalid al-Falih, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, a Saudi oil pipeline was hit by drones on Tuesday.
Shortly before the attack, Houthi rebels in Yemen declared that they had “targeted vital Saudi facilities” in a coordinated drone strike, the New York Times reported.
The drone strike followed Sunday's announcements that two Saudi oil tankers had been attacked in the Persian Gulf.
Tensions in the oil-rich area are high as the Trump administration reimposes economic sanctions against Iran, Saudi Arabia’s regional rival.
Al-Falih told state press that the recent acts of sabotage posed a threat to global economic stability and energy supplies.
He said that the international community must confront the Iranian-allied Houthis.
Iran has denied previous U.S. and U.N. accusations of supplying arms and ballistic missile technology to the Houthi rebels.
Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Salam told the Associated Press that the rebels launched the drone attack against Saudi Arabia “to respond to the crimes they are committing everyday against the Yemeni people.”
Saudi Arabia has been fighting against the Houthis in Yemen since 2015.
