British police have arrested WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

The 47-year-old Australian national took refuge in the embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden.

London’s Metropolitan police alleged that Assange skipped bail at the request of U.S. authorities and is now arrested for "failing to surrender to the court," the BBC reported.

Assange has been indicted for conspiring to steal military secrets with former U.S. intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.

Manning disclosed more than 700,000 confidential documents, diplomatic cables, and videos to WikiLeaks.

As reported in CNN, the Department of Justice accused Assange of conspiring to “assist Manning in cracking a password" to access classified information on Department of Defense computer systems.

At Westminster Magistrates' Court Assange was found guilty of failing to surrender in 2012.

He now faces up to 12 months in prison.

Assange will appear for an extradition hearing on May 2.

If he is convicted on charges of computer intrusion, Assange will face up to another five years in U.S. prison.
