More than 270 election officials in Indonesia have died, mostly from fatigue-related illnesses, caused by hand-counting millions of ballot papers for the world’s biggest single-day election.

On 17 April, the country of 260 million people combined its presidential vote with national and regional parliamentary ballots, to save money.

Approximately 7 million officials were helping count and monitor the votes.

Staff were expected to work throughout the night in sweltering conditions, which took a physical toll on many.

As of Saturday night, Arief Priyo Susanto, spokesman of the General Elections Commission (KPU) said that 1,878 others have fallen ill, Reuters reported.

Unlike civil servants, the large number of temporary polling staff did not undergo medical examinations before starting work.

The government has been criticized for setting unrealistic expectations for its staff.

The KPU plans to compensate 36 million rupiah to surviving families of every deceased worker.

BBC reported that the amount compensated approximates to Indonesia’s annual pay at minimum wage.

The KPU will conclude vote counting and announce Indonesia’s next leaders on 22 May.
