An Aeroflot plane erupted in flames after an emergency landing at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow and killed 41 out of the 78 people on board.

The aircraft, a Sukhoi Superjet-100, was bound for the city of Murmansk but turned around for an emergency landing after the crew issued a distress signal due to ‘malfunctions’ occurring shortly after take-off.

The plane burst into flames upon emergency landing in Moscow after the aircraft’s engines caught fire on the runway, reported Aeroflot in a statement.

Head of Russia’s ministry of health, Veronika Skvortsova reported that six people were in hospital, three of whom are in a critical condition.

Videos circulating on social media showed passengers being evacuated via emergency exit slides to escape the burning aircraft.

Aeroflot reported that their crew “did everything to save the passengers,” who were evacuated in 55 seconds.

Aeroflot have published a list of the survivors who have been identified, adding they will continue to update this as new information emerges.
