An American bitcoin trader and his Thai girlfriend could be facing the death penalty after Thailand’s navy accused them of threatening the country’s sovereignty by “seasteading” off the coast of Phuket.

Thai authorities have revoked the visa of U.S. citizen Chad Elwartowski and have charged him and his partner, Supranee Thepdet, with violating Thai sovereignty.

The pair built a “sea-home” by raising a small octagon cabin atop a 20 metre long pillar above the water, 14 nautical miles from the shore.

Elwartowski had provoked Thai authorities by promoting “seasteads” on social media.

He claimed that his home did not fall under any country’s control and that he was unaffected by government laws on taxation and policy decisions.

The navy claimed that they have evidence that the floating home was built with the intention of creating a legal loophole.

Colonel Kataporn Kumthieng said Elwartowski’s actions were a threat to the country.

Police have reported that the couple went into hiding after Elwartowski’s visa was revoked.

According to The Guardian, Vice Admiral Sitthiporn Maskasem announced: “We have already prepared a vessel, equipment, and manpower to move the structure [and] we will try to move it within a week.”
