The German chemical manufacturer Bayer saw a 12 percent drop in shares after a US jury unanimously ruled that Roundup weed killer contributes to cancer.

This is the second ruling against the maker of Roundup, Monsanto, which Bayer acquired for $63 billion last year.

An additional lawsuit is underway to determine whether and to what extent the company is liable for the carcinogenic effects of Roundup.

Monsanto was the first company to produce a glyphosate-based weed killer. The product is no longer patent protected, and many versions are available on the market.

Glyphosate is now the most commonly used weed-killing agent around the world.

According to legal experts, the jury’s decision on Tuesday could help determine the outcomes of subsequent cases.

The case decided this week was the second of 11,200 Roundup lawsuits set to be tried in the US.

Several regulators, including the US Environmental Protection Agency, have reported that glyphosate probably does not cause cancer in humans.

However, in 2015, the World Health Organization indicated that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
