On Sunday, gunmen stormed a Catholic church in Burkina Faso, killing five members of the congregation and a priest, state media reported.
According to the Guardian, the 20-to-30 attackers burned the church down after attacking the worshippers.
A government spokesman told CNN that the men also set fire to the local health center and destroyed alcohol-serving establishments in the town.
Just two days before Sunday’s attack, two French soldiers were killed during a special operation to free four foreign hostages in the north of Burkina Faso.
A report by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies indicated that acts of terrorism committed by al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliates in Burkina Faso increased to 136 in 2018 from 24 in 2017.
CNN reported that Burkina Faso has also seen a surge in terrorism this year as jihadist groups seek to extend the reach of their operations.
France has deployed approximately 4,500 troops in Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Chad to support local efforts to drive jihadist groups out of the Sahel region.
