Tesla’s Robo-Taxis: A New Ride-Hailing Service

CEO Elon Musk announced at the Tesla Autonomy Investor Day that he expects over 1 million robo-taxis operating on the roads in 2020. Musk pitched the self-driving vehicles as a way for Tesla owners to make money when they are not using their car. With the option to rent out the vehicle and to offer people rides, robo-taxis would compete with ride-hailing services, such as Lyft and Uber.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk pitched his vision of robo-taxis at the Tesla Autonomy Investor Day on Monday.
Musk proposed a network of robotic taxis that would compete with ride-hailing services such as Lyft and Uber.
He pitched the robo-taxis as a self-driving taxi service for Tesla owners to make money when they are not using their vehicles.
The company would take a percentage of the revenue and the rest of the money would be pocketed by the vehicle owner.
Currently, Tesla offers Autopilot as a standard feature in its vehicles.
This advanced driver-assistance system can automatically keep a car in its lane, and brake or accelerate in response to other vehicles or pedestrians.
CNBC reported, Musk said that “all you need to do is improve the software.”
He claimed that using the data collected from existing Tesla vehicles on the road today would be sufficient to improve Autopilot with updated self-driving features.
The CEO claimed that he expects regulatory approval by the end of next year and over 1 million robo-taxis on the road.
CNBC reported, Musk also acknowledged his pattern of missing deadlines. He warned investors: “Sometimes I am not on time, but I get it done.”
