Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn has married the deputy head of his personal security detail, General Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Ayudhya and promoted her to Queen Suthida.
This surprise announcement came just days before his coronation, which is taking place on Saturday, followed by a procession through Thailand’s capital on Sunday.
The news was published in the Royal Gazette.
Footage from their wedding ceremony, which occurred on Wednesday, was broadcasted on the Royal News segment across all Thai Channels.
King Vajiralongkorn, 66, became the constitutional monarch in 2016, succeeding the death of his adored father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was the longest-reigning monarch in the world.
Formerly a Thai Airways flight attendant, Queen Suthida was appointed as the deputy commander of King Vajiralongkorn’s bodyguard unit and was later promoted to a full general in the army in 2016.
There had been speculation in past years about a romantic link between the pair by foreign media and royal observers, but the palace had never issued an official statement on the matter.
