I thought would be fun to post some Change and Community Chest cards from Chinese Monopoly, as a bit of a reading challenge.

1st card is:

向慈善机构损款¥150

Oh, darn, I read "communist chest" at first. Is that Freudian already? Erm, anyway, is there any chance of continuing these monopoly postings?

Yeah,

but we also learned you go into prison for the rest of your life if you do not hand the money back. Even if it is a rather small amount of money.

Hi bazza,

I think that you should have explained the meaning of “地产大亨” (real estate tycoon, di4 chan3 da4 heng1) first. It seems that “Bank Error In Your Favor” is not so rare in China. We learned about that three months ago.

bazza: 咭 is a Cantonese slang for card. It's pronounced as gat or kit or gaat or kaat (Mandarin: ji1). HK people tend to use that more instead of 牌. It might have been a loanword (English: card). However, both are interchangeable for the Cantonese. Take note that it's only used in spoken canto. Written canto uses: 牌 or 卡

Here's some compounds:

信用咭 - seon yung kaat -credit card. note the mandarin: 信用卡

咭片 - kaat pin - business card

賀咭 - ho kaat - greeting card

提款咭 -tai fun kaat bank atm card

閃咭 - sim kaat---simcard or flashcard

How common is 咭 used? It seems to be from the Cantonese.

Hi sushan,

Almost! The most traditional “三好学生” is required to be “思想好,学习好,身体好”, but I hear that its concept has been slightly modified these days. In other words, just satisfying three requirements might not be enough anymore in present Chinese society.

I always like reading the place names on the various versions of Monopoly (Canadian Monopoly has Jasper Avenue and St. Albert Trail, for example). I hope you can post the place names as well.

That whole 三好学生 (body, mind, character if I am not mistaken) practice would make a great lesson topic too.

Hi pituitaryadenoma,

Thanks, I got it. It seems that anything goes not only in Chinese society, but also in Chinese language! I don’t think this game will contribute to producing 三好学生, but I’m sure that it is very good for fostering capable merchants.

Anyway, it is very interesting. Next card, please!

It is 损款, it is right in that context. Because when you play monopoly, your job is not to lost money, you job is to make as much as you can, when you unfortunately get a card that ask you to donate to charity, you are actually losing money in the game, there is no such thing as an act of kindness in such a game, it is about winning or losing. Therefore, when you "donate" under such a circumstances, it is no longer considered as 捐, rather it is considered 损 from that player standpoint.

So 向~损款 is grammatically CORRECT.

Chinese words are very flexible, it can be used in almost any kind of combination of characters (hanzi or kanji). The rule of right or wrong is highly dependent on the context or situation.

I get it. It's a game.

Anyway, "向~损款 (sun3 kuan3)" is perhaps not grammatically correct, I suppose. I look forward to your next "monopoly" posting. I think it's interesting.

It might be because normally you have a choice to donate, but in the game you're forced to.

Hi bazza,

I believe that it is a typical mistake (or typo) due to similarity in shape between two Chinese characters. It cannot be 损款 (sun3 kuan3) in the context of the sentence, unless it is intentional (as a joke), since even 捐款 (donation), of course, always means “to lose money” to you. Oh, I know, people sometimes donate for tax-reduction strategy.

It definitely says 损款 on the card.
