April 26, 2008, 09:01 PM posted in General DiscussionI thought would be fun to post some Change and Community Chest cards from Chinese Monopoly, as a bit of a reading challenge.
1st card is:
向慈善机构损款¥150

April 27, 2008, 12:03 PMIt definitely says 损款 on the card.

April 27, 2008, 12:25 PMHi bazza, I believe that it is a typical mistake (or typo) due to similarity in shape between two Chinese characters. It cannot be 损款 (sun3 kuan3) in the context of the sentence, unless it is intentional (as a joke), since even 捐款 (donation), of course, always means “to lose money” to you. Oh, I know, people sometimes donate for tax-reduction strategy.
bazza
April 27, 2008, 12:40 PMIt might be because normally you have a choice to donate, but in the game you're forced to.

April 27, 2008, 01:14 PMI get it. It's a game. Anyway, "向~损款 (sun3 kuan3)" is perhaps not grammatically correct, I suppose. I look forward to your next "monopoly" posting. I think it's interesting.

April 27, 2008, 09:43 AMThe English translation is: Donation to charity organisation pay ¥150 向 [xiàng] - to 慈善机构 [cí shàn jī gòu] - charity organisation 损款 [sŭn kuăn] - lose funds

April 27, 2008, 02:17 PMIt is 损款, it is right in that context. Because when you play monopoly, your job is not to lost money, you job is to make as much as you can, when you unfortunately get a card that ask you to donate to charity, you are actually losing money in the game, there is no such thing as an act of kindness in such a game, it is about winning or losing. Therefore, when you "donate" under such a circumstances, it is no longer considered as 捐, rather it is considered 损 from that player standpoint. So 向~损款 is grammatically CORRECT. Chinese words are very flexible, it can be used in almost any kind of combination of characters (hanzi or kanji). The rule of right or wrong is highly dependent on the context or situation.

April 27, 2008, 02:53 PMHere''s a request I know you can meet, bazza...how about posting a picture of the monopoly card you are posting so we have more visual input; it will enhance our learning : )
bazza
April 27, 2008, 03:49 PMThat would mean I'd have to scan them all and rub out the English, and it would be harder because you wouldn't be able to use translation tools. ;)

April 27, 2008, 04:23 PMI'll try a bit of html on this one, hopefully it will work. Card #3:
