i think we need a lesson about 觉得

I ran a search on cpod for the word "think" Many examples came up using 觉得 but no lessons. I do recall hearing Jenny and others using this word in some of the lesson banter but not the actual lesson.

I use the word "think" quite often in my everyday dialogue with phrases like "I think...." or "what do you think?"

Are there other words used for "think" and what context would they be used in??

What does Cpod "think" of doing a lesson or Qingwen on this useful word and its variations?

:)

Hi Adam,

I think that 觉得”, as well as 对我来说, is one of favorite phrases among us Mandarin-learners, just like learners of English (me included) are generally fond of using “I think that….” As you guessed, actually there are several words to mean “think or feel” in Chinese, and of course they are different in nuance and connotations. Let me show you them.

我认为 (ren4 wei2) think, regard, consider (formal)
我觉得 (jue2 de) think, feel
我感到 (gan3 dao4) feel, sense, find
我相信 (xiang1 xin2) believe, expect

我估计 (gu1 ji4) guess, estimate
我以为 (yi3 wei2) think, assume
我想 (xiang3) think (conversational)
我看 (kan4) think (conversational)

P/S. 以为 is a little tricky. It is often used like this, e.g. 我以为你是美国人。(I thought you were American)

Hello Adam. I like your idea. Besides the constructions bound with a 我 (wo3; me or I), it would be nice if CPOD could also tackle some other constructions used by Chinese people to express what they think: Eg. words like 好像 (hao3xiang4), 看来 (kan4lai2) etc.

i think sometimes "我发现“ also can instead of "我觉得”

我发现你很会讨女孩子欢心=我觉得你很会讨女孩子欢心

wo3 fa1 xian4 ni3 hen3 hui4 tao3 nv3 hai2zi3 huan1 xin1=wo3 jue2 de ni3 hen3 hui4 tao3 nv3 hai2zi3 huan1 xin1

i find(think) you are good at flirting with girl.

changye, you are welcome. auntie68,

let me give you some examples about how to use “好像”and“看来”。

她好像刚刚哭过。ta1 hao3xiang4 gang1gang1ku1 guo4.

It seems that she cried just now.

他好像不喜欢我。ta1 hao3xiang4 bu4 xi3huan1 wo2.

It seems that he does not like me.

看来你的中文很棒。kan4lai1 ni2de zhong1wen2 hen3 bang4.

It looks like your chinese is very good.

看来你很喜欢巧克力。kan4lai1 ni2 hen3 xi3huan1 qiao3ke4li4.

It looks like you like chocolate very much.

Seems that you like chocolate very much.

Actually, “好像”and“看来” have the same meaning in some context, only have mild difference.

Hope that can help.

Cassie

I now have a much better understanding of these particular words. I will study them according to your examples.

You have both been a tremendous help to us! Thank you very much!
