Hi,

I'm very new to this group and to the Chinese language. I'm watching the opening ceremony right now being broadcasted on NBC and so far, only 45 minutes in I'm just blown away. The perfect precision of the performers and the technology they've shown so far is incredible.

They're still showing ancient Chinese culture right now and it's great to see how much history China has. I really love this opening ceremony so far, it's beautiful.

Cassielin:

Absolutely awe-inspiring...I'm watching it for a second time right now.

It's a testament to the care and beauty that Chinese put into their lives and country.

Hopefully it made a positive impact on some of the Chinese naysayers of the world.

It is just now after midnight on the pacific coast of North America.  I just finished watching the opening ceremony.  I am very happy for China, and very impressed.  I knew thirty-two years ago when I visited China that a day like this would take place.  Who could stop the Chinese people determined to place themselves proudly among the people of the world. But who could have known how fast and strong it would come.  China has a lot to be proud of.  The performances were magnificent, and I thought captured the beauty and grandeur of China.  I thought Zhang Yimou out did himself in thinking big, but also in getting the big picture.  There is a philosophical dialectic that has existed in China, brought out way back in the 易经 and 道德经 that courses through Chinese history.  When you grasp that, like Zhang Yimou, you see the beauty of both the mass and the individual, the fast and exciting and the slow and majestic.  China has come a long way from those days when it was called the sick man of Asia.  For anyone who loves to see the oppressed stand up, it was a glorious day.  As Zhou Enlai used to say, "When you have a good drink of water, don't forget those who dug the well."

I didn't watch it... I may, at one stage, watch it if I ever find the time but at this point I don't really have much of an interest in the Olympics. This is really no different than it was for me last time, I didn't watch those games either. I went to the games in 2000 because it was being hosted in my home town but that was the only real reason I went.

I realise it's supposed to be more than just a global sporting event but it's hard to see it as more than that. I have been following the build-up to the olympics for the last few months, and I will continue to follow the after-effects of the olympics when it is over but the event itself, is just an event to me.

Anyway, that's this one person's feelings about it.

I think thought it was truely magical, particularly liked the drum countdown but all of it was superb. Thought it was cool when Sarah Brightman sung in Mandarin as well.

Flawless, confident and dazzling.

I usually find opening ceremonies - with dancers, streamers and a few fireworks - tacky and unwatchable, but I was stuck to the TV screen from start to finish. Graceful. Beautiful.

Only the parade of nations marching into the stadium dragged a bit (that's Britain's fault - introduced at the London games 1908, I think). But it was fun to try to pick out the Chinese names of countries, to work out their order based on stroke count (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, anyone?).

My favourite part was the mass drumming. Hundreds of drummers perfectly coordinated. That summed it up, for me: effective teamwork on a huge scale. Power and grace.

What did it have to do with sport? With the brotherhood of Man? It was about China.

A BBC commentator said the energy and confidence made him think of Britain in the 19th century. Well, no! China has found her place in the world without gunboats and opium. More like container ships and damned hard work.

Poor London 2012! The grumblings about cost have already begun. Link to article in The Economist.

An inflexion point in history? Industry and savings in the East, crushing debt in the West, oil in the middle? Mr. Putin obviously thinks so.

It was just as amazing as I was expecting. I am a big fan of Zhang Yimou and knew he would produce something great. I am sure his popularity in China must have increased much more. My favourite part was actually when the flowers came out of the printing press, I thought it looked spectacular.

Worst thing about the ceremony is that during the whole time I was watching I knew London 2012 will produce nothing close to as good as this when it opens. They couldn't even make a good logo, haha.

All I could say:

Unbelievable!

不可思議!

我現在比較驕傲啦。

天啊! I was really fascinated with the “和” 漢字 presentation.

cassielin, I thought the opening ceremony was fantastic! Amazing!  Awe inspiring!  Of all the opening ceremonies I have watched (and remember), this was definitely the best, the most creative one.  My favorite part was seeing little Lin Hao walking the floor with Yao Ming. 2nd best was...everything else ;^)

I was a little annoyed with the NBC announcers because they would speak during the announcement of the countries so many times I missed the chinese name of the country.

Zhang Yimou is indeed a genious!

大家好,Thank you for your feedbacks!

Hope you guys can remember the two chinese famous sayings in the opening ceremony!

有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎!

四海之内皆兄弟!

And obitoddkenobi is right, Zhou Enlai used to say, "When you have a good drink of water, don't forget those who dug the well." In chinese, that means喝水不忘挖井人。The deeper meaning is 饮水思源。

Adam and xiaohu,

Here is the only one online link we can see the opening ceremony in China. I don't know if you can see it.

I did not see the whole thing (looking for a DVD to be sold or a web replay of hightlights).

From what I did see, was probably the most beautiful prodouction ever for the olympics.  The NBC commentations made a point "...they did it with people."

A great testament to the work of all the performers and production team.

It was stunning.  I spoke with a friend in China and she said it was amazing.  "Impressive" does not do it justice.

Cassielin,

all I can say is wow. I can only imagine how it would feel to be there. I have had other awe inspiring moments in China but I wish I could have been there to witness this one. You should be very proud. I was in China during the last olympics and you could feel the excitement in the air. Im sure this time it will be much more intense. I hope the rest goes as well as the opening ceremony.
