February 21, 2009, 10:31 PMchangye, for a long time we used to say 近くて遠い国 (so close and yet so far) about Korea. more and more, i think Koreans and Japanese are so alike that we talk about the differences all the time. and China is another world. yes, it is interesting.

February 19, 2009, 03:35 PMkimiik, it looks like they painted China over Geisha on this 34th Str and 8th Ave building (across from One Penn Plaza). see more ads...

February 19, 2009, 03:57 PMEven if China took over, China and Japan really "share the same wall" in a literal and figurative way.

February 19, 2009, 08:10 PMnot that you all don't know this, but the "geisha" is a strange hodgepodge. we can tell they looked at ukiyo-e woodblock prints for the face. the hairdo is sort of halfway right. the rest of her is from something i don't recognize. weirdest are the hands seen together with that face. the ukiyo-e style would never portray arms and hands like that. it's not offensive, just weird. so it's just as well they painted over it.

February 20, 2009, 04:12 AMgoulniky, in your post the comma is everything.
On the number of countries, there must be some generous rounding. As pointed out here, the U.S. State Department recognizes 194 countries. Since Taiwan is a country by any rational definition (i.e. excepting bureaucrats and nationalists), that makes 195. Still, 200? So AT&T works in Uzbekistan, Tanzania... Somalia!!!! Pirates 'R Us?

February 19, 2009, 02:24 PMit didn't mean that ,this "like" means "such as"

February 20, 2009, 08:34 PMsuxiaoya, I have read "Eat Shoots and Leaves." I'm not sure if it's any better than my old Strunk and White, "The Elements of Style," but it's sure a lot more interesting... plus a really fun title.
Changye, I think they had the same guy count countries that designed the "gesisha." Those marketing guys...

You are very right. There is a right chengyu to describe this historical fact, which is usually used when referring to (or emphasizing) the "friendly" relationship between China and Japan.
一衣带水 (yi1yi1dai4shui3)
separated only by a strip of water
Actually, Japan was a very voracious student at "Chinese culture school" in ancient times. I readily admit that Japan greatly owes what it is today to Chinese culture, however, interestingly enough, the two countries and peoples are very different from each other in many ways today.
Korea was also an excellent student at "China school". I think that Korea is the country that has been most deeply influenced by China and Chinese culture in the world, which is the reason why they use Chinese family names such as 金 and 李.
Having said that, those two good students, Korean and Japanese, are also rather different from each other, probably much more different than western guys might think, which I think is attributed to the existence of the "strip of water", perhaps.
Difference makes things more interesting, indeed!

February 20, 2009, 05:34 AM@tvan Have you read 'Eats shoots and leaves?'
Add a comma between 'eats' and 'shoots' and the meaning of the book's title changes entirely - which is the point. As you say, commas are important!
