"Age Pyramid" of the CPod community? [usage not biological age]

July 14, 2007 at 11:51 AM posted in General Discussionitaliana's question on "Who is Aric" made me curious: I wonder how the distribution of "usage age" is within the CPod community:
- How many percent of the current active users have started before 2006?
- How many before June 2006?
- How many before January 2007?
- How many before the switch to V3?
- How many after the switch?
I am also missing some users who used to be among the most active once (where is Bob???)...
There was a poll at CPod in the summer of 2006 which showed a dominance of new users.
Has that distribution changed?
What is the fluctuation?
How "young" is the community now?

"(What ever happened to polls and the like? I miss the right sidebar of V2!)"
Hi Rich,
I miss a lot of things about V2. A year ago ChinesePod was like my own little neighborhood. I just couldn't wait to check out what was going on every day. I don't feel the same with V3 and the atmosphere seems to have gotten a bit stiff. I really miss the old Saturday Show and Word on the Street and all of the lively and endless discussions on Ken's Blog. Now it is the "Praxis" blog. To me "Praxis" sounds like a laxative or something. I guess I am just not a V3 kind of guy. Too many bells and whistles. I am more like a dinosaur. Oh, well, like my Mom always said, "Onward ever, backward never"...(sigh).
Thanks for the kind comments everyone! It is comforting to know that you have been missed.
Saludos a todos de mi parte,
Mexico Bob

Uh, no
- How many before June 2006?
Uh, almost. July 2006. I celebrated my one year anniversary of knowing this coolest place on the 'net. :)
- How many before January 2007?
Moi
- How many before the switch to V3?
Wo
- How many after the switch?
Uh, I still remained! :)

I started listening to CP in Sept. '06 in preparation for a trip to China. I should have begun earlier... But at least I was able to ask the flight attendant - "qíng wèn, wǒ yào yī bēi shuǐ", and simple things like that. It's funny how Chinese here in the U.S. mirror the desire to improve English language skills just as I am struggling with their native tongue. Our exchanges are always amusing...

I remember the first podcasts I heard were about Christmas, so I must've started in December of 05. It was love at first ... listen. I still love my chinese pod, even if I'm not computer savvy enough to figure out a lot of the site. I listen to my podcasts, do some of the premium practice stuff. I even have been talking to Aggie for the past couple of months. WOW, has that ever helped my conversational Chinese. I am a walking advertisement for Chinesepod whenever I meet anyone with even the smallest interest in learning Manderin.

A few months after I started living in China someone introduced me to ChinesePod, used it for free for a good year or so, became a Premium subscriber after the launch of V3. Almost never left comments until recently. Use it every day.

Registered Dec. 2005, but was a listener before I got the courage to commit. When was the first podcast?

FYI
Have been logged in from very early days when I chanced upon the site, used many other sites to translate my friends emails and chats on QQ !
Started to find time for Chinese pod then signed up on V3 as I felt I had free_loaded long enough!
I am now finding it hard to fit in the study time, but will not drop off.
Having worked in China over the past 15 years, and loving the place I shall always keep up the language practice and hope to return at least once a year

I just registered to the Cantonese forum and noticed Mexico Bob has also registered. Probably a good sign.

I found the site November or December of 2005 and registered early 2006. I became a basic subscriber a few months later. Presently, I'm in my second month as a practice subscriber.
It's been very interesting to watch the site grow, pains and all.

When I click on "User Details" under your profile, it has "Registered: Nov 30, 1999" Hmmmm....you must have had a premonition that CPod was going to form 6 years AFTER you registered! Wow! That's AWESOME!

OK, Bazza and Lantian take the crown. Still around since CPod's Cretaceous period.
I myself consider myself fairly "young", having discovered CPod not before April 2006.

August 13, 2007 at 08:34 AMHi Mexico Bob, et al, Trust us! Despite the new look of V3, we are all the same old people here at Cpod, who love all our CPoddies and are working hard to make Mandarin learning fun and effective for you. I hope you will be happy to see John's blog post of today, on this very subject, just out! We are listening, and have some new improvements coming, including the old, much beloved and missed ' right sidebar!' Check out the blog post for all the details. :)
