Important people and cultural icons

August 26, 2009, 08:42 AM posted in General DiscussionHi everybody,
I want to make and share some new flashcards like I did here that include the Chinese names for worldwide famous people and icons, such as 'The Beatles' or 'Marilyn Monroe' and so on. (I get tired of resorting to the English name.) I want to make two sets of 50. Do any of you have any ideas on who should be included? Thanks in advance.

Sadly no, it was me responding to Barb's story of hot August nights in Australia (get it?). We do tend to get off topic from time to time.

August 26, 2009, 10:48 AMHaha, he wouldn't normally top my list, but because the thought of talking about him in Chinese makes me smile, I will definitely include him.
Was this thread you spoke of something I would find useful for this project?

August 27, 2009, 05:51 PM@xiaophil, I would add some suggestions, but I don't know... the list you compiled is pretty eclectic. I'm guessing that you discussing non-Chinese cultural icons. If I was looking for a foreign cultural icon who had a major impact on China, my number one selection would be
Karl Marx - 馬克思

August 28, 2009, 01:04 AMKarl Marx is a good one. Thanks. Hmmm, I feel like some other philosophers need mentioning... But you are right, I am avoiding Chinese figures.

August 28, 2009, 01:42 PMXiaophil, I had a Chinese calendar last year with a quote for every day. I recall that besides Marx and Socrates--Lenin, Einstein and Shakespeare were the most-oft quoted foreigners. fyi.

August 27, 2009, 02:55 PMHaha, well you know bababardwan, I was going to include all the current presidents and prime ministers, but the list would have gotten pretty long. However, because he is a Mandarin speaking maniac, and because I am grateful for your feedback, I will gladly squeak him in.

August 26, 2009, 10:31 AMHi Xiaophil
I had a go with 尼尔戴蒙德(ni2 er3 dai4 meng2 de2) on another thread recently - but is he famous enough?
