Ok,I thought I may as well start a post where we can put out a list together of some relevant Chinese vocab we can think about while we watch the Winter Olympics and then maybe even go and try and talk to some Chinese about the current Winter Olympics.

I'm glad you started this thread bababardwan! Given Vancouver's huge Chinese community, I'd assumed there'd be lots interest in the Winter Olympics.

Although China isn't a the kind of force it is in the summer games yet, it has made a strong showing in several events. Zhenlijiang mentioned curling. China has at least two great female speed skaters, Wang Meng and Zhou Yang. Ice Dancing.

Ice Dancing

Today I discovered China has a women's hockey team! They're not quite a match for Canada or the US yet, but I bet they will be before long. (I may be tossed out of Canada for suggesting that. Think soccer hooligans are bad?)

So am I really the only one interested in the Winter Olympics?...or is it [the more likely explanation I'm guessing] that folk just think it's too low frequency [once in every 4 years] to bother with.I suppose there may be some partial validity to that viewpoint, but I always feel that the new specific low frequency vocab [technical jargon and the like ] is only a smallish part of the overall dialogue which is still a great medium to deliver other new vocab and grammar structures,as well as see familiar stuff used in a new context [made better if it's an interesting or topical context],so I generally think that if we were to take something at Intermediate or esp UI or above then any topic seems valid to me.

Baba, sorry if this sounds sarcastic but when a city in China is picked to host the winter games, then the topic will certainly be deemed interesting enough.
Actually I'm surprised too, I mean Canada's one of China's great friends. And when a good friend of many years has delighted and celebrated with you at your party and now it's their turn to host, you do more than drum up the minimum enthusiasm, right? What happened to giving face?

thanks zhen.Sorry I can't read your linked to comment at the moment but will check that out with interest later.I hear what you're saying but my last comment was more addressed to Poddies than it was to Chinese [unless you meant to imply that Poddies here are only interested in things that are related directly to China...the only relation here is that I've noticed Chinese competitors at the games] and as Poddies are from all over including many of the countries represented at the games I thought they'd perhaps have more interest. What about our Canadian Poddies themselves? [Perhaps they're either glued to their tellies at the moment and taking a break from CPod or some may be lucky enough to be there themselves].I don't mind if there is no interest...that's fair enough ...I'm just surprised there isn't more and curious to know why.

I have a theory. I think the Chinese government doesn't want to emphasize that Chinese winter athletes are for the most part not very competitive yet. Score well at the Summer Olympics = massive face; score well at the Winter Olympics = some face. It's sad that Chinese athletes are don't seem to be spurred by love of competition or the sport they are playing, but by dreams of boasting their country's image, or worse yet, fear of letting down their countrymen. That's the way it seems to be to me. Someone please prove me wrong. I don't like being cynical.

Baba, sorry. I really don't pay much attention to sports in general. It is a good topic, though.

No need to be sorry mate. Each to their own.I was just surprised and curious that's all.I was forgetting for a sec that Aussies in general [yeah, I know many aren't and generalisations are what they are] are considered sports mad and its not everyone's cup of tea.I suppose there was a whole extra website setup by CPod for the Beijing Olympics [is that still running btw?] ..and there was just so much interest in general ...but then again it was being held in China ,so...zhen's probably right.Anyhow, thanks for sharing your take on it. :)

Hi bababardwan

I tried to post something "nice" here, but I'm afraid I have to admit that talking about sports is not my thing .......

no worries changye. Personally I think it's more important to keep fit if you can than be a sports fan but I do love to watch some of these amazing athletes for inspiration and entertainment but perfectly understand it's not for everyone.I suppose the folk that are into it are watching it and not here, hehe.
