What do you like about China?

April 14, 2010, 11:35 PM posted in General DiscussionThe question is as simple as that. You don't have to love China (although perhaps you do), and you don't have to like every bit of her, but unless you are one of those people that found yourself in China almost by accident, or you just want to conduct business, chances are there are quite a few reasons you like China. Please do tell, no matter if you were here, will be here, are here or are just observing from afar.

April 15, 2010, 03:01 AMHi xiaophil

April 15, 2010, 03:55 AMHey Changye

April 20, 2010, 12:43 AMI thought I would try to revive this post. It didn't survive the great dashboard fiasco. Anyway...
Another reason I like China: much better days are (probably) before her. I'm not saying my country, the US, doesn't have better days before her, but it is hard to imagine she will grow as fast as China. I like all the change here (at least there is a lot of change here in Shanghai). I like that I was here for the Olympics. I like that I will be here for the Expo (even though I kind of dread the forthcoming traffic situation). In short, it's nice to see a people get back on its feet.
(This translation is a mess, haha.

April 22, 2010, 05:48 PMmy opinion:

April 14, 2010, 11:52 PMI don't mean to sound cliche, but I do like China because of her long history. I actually like all history. Probably my favorite is the Roman Empire, particularly the Eastern Empire. But I am drawn to Chinese history as well because it is more exotic in my mind. As an American, I am interested in any place that has had cities, written language, politics and what not for thousands of years. That's not to discount Native North Americans (I am part Native North American), but people often feel drawn to what they don't have.
At least in Shanghai, I feel completely safe. I have heard that some places in the South and even North can be dangerous, but I think in general Chinese cities are fairly safe to walk around. What I am about to say might annoy some of my fellow Americans, but hey, it's how I feel. I'm glad that guns are in short supply here. It's easier to run from knives than guns.
Life here is fairly pressure free. I know it is the exact opposite for Chinese people and some of you corporate employees, but to me teaching in China is mostly fun. I hope that when the day comes where I have to find another job (and that day may be coming soon), I can adjust back quickly.
