No problem. 当时 isn't so much 书面语 or 口语. It's common in both writing and speech. It's used to refer to a time in the past and can be both general, (i.e. 'back then'), and also specific like it is in the dialog. Here are a few sentences I found online.

当时旅行没有今天这么容易。

In those days, travelling was not as easy as it is today.

当时我们初级中学缺少教师。

At the time, our junior middle school was short on teachers.

他当时肯定知道她需要什麽.

He must have known what she wanted.

You're right, the definition for 撞 came from the 撞死 in the dialog. 撞 does not mean to 'crash into and kill', but rather just to 'crash/run into'. Sorry about any confusion. We'll have it fixed soon.

当时 is 'at the time' or 'at that time'. It's something we don't always add in English, but another good translation for this sentence would be, 'You scared me to death back there!' The 当时 here refers to when they guy almost hit her with the car.

Strangely enough the spellchecker in our system here and in my word processor (Open Office) doesn't recognize it as incorrect. Still doesn't seem right though. Fixed.
