December 24, 2008 at 7:03 AMVery true. It even goes as far as many people thinking that Christmas is the 24th. Many of my students have made that mistake.
I also recieve the majority, if not all, 'Merry Christmas!' and '祝你圣诞节快乐!' texts on Christmas eve rather than the day itself.

February 26, 2008 at 5:57 AMAlso, I second the madness on that London map! It's not even the characters, I just had no idea London was a sea of winding avenues. And I thought Chinese cabbies were good...

February 26, 2008 at 5:51 AMChand, Chitty is right about the suffixes being used in different contexts, (and that's therefore the best way to really learn them) but just wanted to note a common example. People often say: 你吃饭了吗? either as a friendly greeting or as the actual question. However, you also commonly hear: 你吃过了吗? or 你吃过了没有? So, in this context, the 过 doesn't mean ever, just have you eaten. (The 过 being 'have' and the 了 bein the 'en' on 'eaten')

February 25, 2008 at 8:06 AMI can totally second that about the Shanghai police. When I reqistered there last year, I had just landed in China and was an easy target for extortion. They basically told me that becuase I hadn't registered within 3 days of landing, I had to pay a fine for everyday thereafter that had increased to 600 RMB and stoped there. (the cap) I ended up sitting in a room for over 2 hours answering questions and watching the guy fill out 'forms' (they all looked identical). I just paid it. I really wasn't too clear on what was going on, but I needed the paperwork. I just re-registered here in Nanjing. I was dreading the task and gave myself a good 3 hours to get it done. What happened? I just walked in, handed them my passport, told them where I lived and walked out. What a difference.

还有,我超喜欢吃新疆菜。就是因为听这节课我今晚应该会去吃。哈哈
