Here's the part you refer to (from the USCCB - New American Bible).
On the morning of the third day there were peals of thunder and lightning, and a heavy cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.
But Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stationed themselves at the foot of the mountain.
Mount Sinai was all wrapped in smoke, for the LORD came down upon it in fire. The smoke rose from it as though from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently.
The trumpet blast grew louder and louder, while Moses was speaking and God answering him with thunder.
When the LORD came down to the top of Mount Sinai, he summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up to him.
Then the LORD told Moses, "Go down and warn the people not to break through toward the LORD in order to see him; otherwise many of them will be struck down.
Still sounds like one guy doing the religion creation intercession to me, where's the bit about YHWH revealing himself to "all of the children of Israel?" In fact this deity seems rather unwilling to be seen by (almost) anyone, he must have had some kind of psycho-social affliction.

September 19, 2009 at 8:50 AMI was just kidding orangina!
Dashan replied to an email I sent him once, which amazed me! I'd been emailing the CCTV9 website, wondering why the Travel in Chinese website is never updated or seems to change, and never got hide nor hair of an answer. So I asked the great man himself via his own website. He was really nice and explained to me that in China, this was quite normal. They had told him that a series of books and VCDs of the series would soon be out. It's like 4 years later and they still aren't!
Perhaps the natural reaction is to be both amused and a little admiring of how he's willingly become a brand in China, the Chinese person's 老外, but perhaps these days he's not so 受欢迎.

September 20, 2009 at 6:33 AMHe is so familiar to Chinese people that if you are here for any length of time and use your Chinese in daily life, references/comparisons to him will always be made. *sigh*
It's funny really. Maybe it reflects badly on westerners' traditional lack of skill in Chinese. I mean when a Chinese person comes to the west and learns to speak excellent English, we don't all go: how extraordinary! That guy must have his own TV show and perform for us at new year!
I wrote to Dashan twice actually. The second time I offered to fill in for him at work if he needed any time off, but he didn't reply that time. Strange.
